Tailors get busy as Thimphu Tshechu draws closer

With the vibrant Thimphu Tshechu just around the corner, many people are eager to be dressed in their finest attire. As a result, the tailoring shops across the capital have been witnessing a surge in orders compared to other days. However, tailors said the number of orders is not as high as it used to be some years ago.

Tailoring shops are buzzing with activity. From stitching new outfits to last-minute alterations, tailors are working tirelessly to meet customers’ demand.

Dawa Penjor, a tailor “As festivals such as Dromchoe and Tshechu approach, people get excited to wear new clothes and rush to us, asking to complete their orders faster. On other days, we receive orders from our regular customers, but during festivals, many people come in hurry with requests.”

Tenzin Wangmo, another tailor said “We mostly get silk kiras and clothes made of expensive materials to stitch when Tshechu is approaching. Moreover, we receive a lot of orders during festivals such as Tshechu compared to other normal days.”

However, tailors said the number of orders received is not as high compared to pre-covid times.

Pema Zangmo, a tailor said “We receive more orders during Tshechus but it is not as many as we used to get in the past. We do receive more orders during Tshechu and school concerts.”

“Demand for tailoring services has dropped compared to pre-COVID times and until the Australia rush happened. We used to be busy with many orders. However, now there is an increase in demand because of the upcoming Tshechu, as people are bringing in silk and raw silk clothes for stitching,” said Ugyen Rinzin, another tailor.

The bustling atmosphere in tailoring shops reflects the cultural significance of festivals such as Tshechu.

There are 114 licensed tailoring businesses operating in Thimphu alone.
