LG election related disputes still unresolved

The high court says it has passed the verdicts on all six Local Government election related petitions.

The litigants however say their cases have once again been dismissed and they were denied justice. They described the whole judicial process as a sheer waste of time and resources.

In the aftermath of the Local Government elections, a total of 20 petitions were filed against 17 Gups, a Mangmi and two Tshogpa elects.

The district courts dismissed all the disputes following an order from the Supreme Court. Six however decided to appeal to the high court.

After hearing the cases for almost a month, the high court says the verdicts have been passed. The litigants say the verdicts do not spell out who is right and who is wrong, leaving the cases unresolved.

The geogs from where the six appellants come from have been affected badly. The development works have been halted with no leaders in the geog.

The Chief Election Commissioner said unless courts ordered otherwise, all the results of the election will stand and elected leaders must assume office as soon as possible.

This may well be, but where is the justice for litigants who appealed against the election results to uphold the rule of law and ensure fair play in future elections.
