Gelegphu’s Wide Area Network (WAN) inaugurated

The Wide Area Network (WAN) in Gelegphu Thromde was inaugurated on Saturday.  With this, communications and service delivery between various offices in the Thromde is expected to be cheaper, faster and more reliable.

Wide Area Network is a telecommunications network or computer network that exists over a large-scale geographical area.

A WAN connects different smaller networks, including local area networks (LANs) and metro area networks (MANs). This enables computers and users in different locations to communicate with each other.

The thromde WAN network connects 21 government agencies, two security checkpoints and three schools in Gelegphu Thromde.

It will centralize IT infrastructure and increase bandwidth as well.

“Rolling of IT and IT enabled services will become much easier, which will further create an opportunity to foster innovation and creativity,” the information and communications minister Karma Donen Wangdi said.

The Gelegphu Thromde initiated the project to harness the benefits of high speed fibre optic network that enables direct inter-connection with all regional offices.

Gelegphu Thrompon Tikaram Kafley said the network will bring down the monthly expenditure of internet bandwidth from Nu 8000 to Nu 1350.

“The direct network connectivity will also improve accessibility to the online services such as G2C, G2B and other public services,” he added.

The Wide Area Network was set up at a cost of Nu 6.2 M.
