Defendants ordered to pay more than Nu 28 M in DeSuup Phub Gyem’s accident case appeal to High Court

Almost two years after an accident left a DeSuup on duty confined to bed, the wait for justice is still not over. The Ministry of Information and Communications, the economic affairs ministry and two private individuals appealed to the High Court yesterday after the district court found them guilty of causing the accident. The Thimphu District Court earlier this month ordered the two ministries and the two private individuals to pay more than Nu 28 M to Desuup Phub Gyem and the state.

Turning trash into cash- Tsirang

Changing the despairing narratives of increasing unmanaged waste, many Bhutanese youth started commercialising waste management. They have turned what many see as unwanted trash into a source of livelihood. One such individual is a 30-year-old university graduate in Tsirang who is making a living out of managing waste while also contributing to maintaining a clean and green environment.

Six TTI students to undergo landscape design training in Thailand

Planning an outdoor makeover would possibly become easier now. Through the Skills Development Programme, the labour ministry for the first time trained eight youth to become landscape designers. Landscape design is the art of planning, arranging and modifying features in a landscape to achieve beautiful outdoor spaces. In the first batch, six of them will further undergo on-the-job training for two months in Thailand.

Three convicts appeal to high court in vehicle hiring scam case

Three women convicted by the Punakha District Court of breach of trust, deceptive practice and forgery appealed to the High Court, yesterday. The district court, Thursday, sentenced them along with four others to a minimum of six months to more than 31 years in prison for their involvement in a vehicle hiring scam. 

Golden Youth Award camp held after two years

After a gap of two years amid COVID-19 restrictions, 40 students from schools across the country came together in the capital for one of the most celebrated events of the youth. The Golden Youth Award, this time, was held for two years, for this year and the year before when the event could not be held due to the COVID situation. Instituted in 2008, the Golden Youth Award is a platform to inspire and motivate youth to excel holistically.

Passport office issues travel document amid shortage of passport booklets

The passport division in Thimphu has run out of the ordinary passport booklet due to an overwhelming number of applicants in recent months. The office receives nearly 300 applicants every day. As a temporary measure, the office started issuing green travel documents since Saturday.

All is not lost for former Gaydrungs

There were worries and insecurities over losing their livelihoods among around 200 Gaydrungs in the country when the government issued an executive order to discontinue the post in April this year. But looks like all is not lost for the former gewog clerks. Riding on the years of experience they had acquired while in service, three former Gaydrungs in Tsirang started a business which provides documentation services to the locals in the district. They started the business a month after the relieving order perhaps to see a better livelihood two months later.

Chess Olympiad sparks a surge of interest in chess among youth

Going by the records with the Bhutan Chess Federation, more youth are taking interest in chess. It was evident during the recently held chess training camp in 13 Youth Centres across the country. More than 450 youth participated in the three-day training camp. Last year, around 250 participated in similar training.

Need for sport facilities in Zhemgang

Most of the districts in the country own an artificial turf football ground. But not Zhemgang. The district doesn’t even have a proper football ground. And as a result, nothing much happens when it comes to sporting activities in the district. Now, with the country returning to normalcy, the residents want development in sports.

Two men sentenced for statutory rape in Zhemgang

The Zhemgang District Court convicted two men of raping a nine-year-old girl. The crime took place in three separate incidents last year. Upholding the Pangbang Dungkhag Court’s judgment, the District Court sentenced 36-year-old Neten Wangchuk to life imprisonment for raping his step-daughter. However, the District Court increased the prison term for 38-year-old Sangay Gyeltshen from five to 15 years.
