People in Draagteng continues to battle forest fire

The People of Draagteng Gewog in Trongsa continues to battle forest fire for the third day today. It started on the afternoon of February 4 from Yoormo under Langthil Gewog.

NA endorses RTI Bill

The Chapter 5 of the Right to Information (RTI) Bill, which talks about the exemption from disclosure of information, saw an extensive deliberation in the National Assembly yesterday. A few of the MPs argued the eight sub-sections would make it difficult for citizens to access information through RTI. But there were others who argued that all the sections were important to disclose information without hurdles.

Convention on establishing MIGA ratified

The National Council today unanimously ratified the convention on establishing the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) and the double tax avoidance agreement between Bhutan and India.

Attempt to capture gecko will result in a penalty of Nu.50,000

A fine of Nu.50,000 will be levied if a person attempts to capture Tokay Gecko. An additional Nu.50,000 will be imposed if that person captures a Tokay Gecko.

Former PM conferred Honorary Doctorate

The former Prime Minister, Jigmi Y. Thinley has been conferred Honorary Doctorate by one of the oldest universities in Europe, the Catholic University in Louvain, Belgium.

National Council Amendment Bill 2014

For the need to amend the National Council Act 2008, the Legislative Committee of the National Council prepared the National Council Amendment Bill 2014. The Legislative Committee said the bill was drafted to prevent any anomalous in the law. So, the bill was tabled for discussion in the house on Thursday.

Forest fire continues to rage for third day

The forest fire in Wangdue Phodrang continues to rage for the third day today. Until yesterday, about 7,000 acres of the forest cover had been damaged by the fire. It is said to have been started near Chuzomsa check post on Monday.

The President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Takehiko Nakao, said Bhutan has been able to achieve remarkable progress under the ADB assistance. The President said ADB will continue to work for the betterment of Bhutan’s socio-economic development. Bhutan became the member of the Asian Development Bank in 1982.

Elections and bye-elections to elect Tshogpas for 12 vacant Gewog Tshogde Tshogpa Demkhongs were held yesterday. The 12 vacant Gewog Tshogde Tshogpa Demkhongs were in Bumthang, Chhukha, Pema Gatshel, Punakha, Samtse, Trashi Yangtse and Haa.

Customs decides to do away with compulsory weighing of trucks

Since last week, the Customs officials in Phuentshogling have decided to do away with the compulsory weighing of trucks loaded with goods in order to obtain customs clearance. This, according to officials is to ease the traffic congestion in the town. It was proposed by the Thromde who held a meeting with the customs last week.
