Two villages of Umling to get irrigation channel soon

Two villages of Doongmin and Daangling under Umling Gewog in Sarpang have seven hundred acres of paddy field. Until now farmers had to depend on monsoon for irrigation. Since the rain water was not enough, farmers said it affected the yield. However, this problem will be addressed once the irrigation channel to the two villages funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests is complete this year.

Dagana’s mounting waste problem

Dagana town is known for its greenery and has often been publicised as having an unspoiled environment. But today, the town is troubled by improper dumping of wastes.

A weeklong Moenlam Chenmo began in Chhukha on Friday. His Holiness the Je Khenpo is presiding over the ceremony. Hundreds of devotees, from Thimphu and Phuentshogling as well, are attending the ceremony. Unlike the past year, this time, the ceremony is being organised by the Gewog administrations in the Dzongkhag. The Moenlam Chenmo, which is being organised annually in the Dzongkhag, started in 2011.

MoIC lists highest in irregularities

The Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC) has the highest number of irregularities, according to the Audit Report of 2012. The Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), while presenting the report to the joint sitting of the Parliament today, said the ministry had over Nu. 114 million in irregularities.

NC directs NLC and MoWHS to follow House’s decisions

The National Council, yesterday, decided that the Trowa Theatre land at Changjiji, Thimphu should be leased for 25 years with effect from July 1,2001.  The resolution was based on the decision of the Dispute Settlement Committee of the National Land Commission (NLC).

Remembering 2009 September 21 earthquake

Schools across the country performed the preparedness drill, today, to mark the anniversary of the 2009 September 21 earthquake that struck eastern Bhutan. Several people lost their lives and caused huge damage to the properties.

Darla elects new Gup

The people of Darla once again went to the polls, yesterday. This time, it was to elect their Gup. Mil Kumar Mongar, 35, was elected the new Gup after securing 909 votes. The post had been vacant after the former Gup’s demise, last month.

People across the country will celebrate Thruebab or Blessed Rainy Day tomorrow. Pangrizampa astrologers say the sacred rain will begin falling at about 2 am and will last an entire week. The Day marks the end of rainy season in the Bhutanese calendar. It is believed that if one bathes on this day, one will be cleansed of all negative deeds and bad luck.

NC members raised concerns on political corruption

Political corruption needed to be addressed immediately otherwise it will weaken the very essence of democracy. This was the concern raised by National Council members yesterday. The discussion came up while discussing the Anti-Corruption Report 2012, which reflected a few cases related to political corruption.

RUB rejects Sherubtse’s proposal to start masters’ courses

A proposal to start masters’ courses in Sherubtse College has been rejected by the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB). The reason being lack of qualified faculty. The College, one of the oldest institutions in the Country, was supposed to begin offering masters’ courses from this year. The college is re-working its proposal, now.
