A disease worries potato growers of Dangkhar, Zhemgang

Potato growers of Dangkhar village under Trong Gewog in Zhemgang are disappointed with the potato yield this time. With the harvest season just begun, potatoes are being infected by the blight, a disease caused by a fungus.

First time was not good, but not for all

For the first time, a truckload of agricultural produce from Chaskar Gewog in Monggar reached the Centenary Farmers Market (CFM) in the capital yesterday. However, much to their disappointment, they were not able to sell their produce as expected despite cheap rates they offered. But for Mango sellers, it was a bumper sale.

Not much takers, although free

The Nehru-Wangchuck Cultural Centre in the capital offers free classes from Yoga to Music. The Centre also has facilities like Library and reading room, exhibition gallery among others. However, the facilities are underutilised, according to the Centre.

3 arrested for prostitution and possessing tobacco products

Three people were arrested in connection with prostitution on Tuesday in Tshongdue, Paro. Police will charge a 26-year-old Bhutanese woman with prostitution and a 20-year-old Indian man for patronising a prostitute.

More graduates registered for BCSE

Two thousand six hundred and twenty three university graduates have registered for the Bhutan Civil Service Examination 2012. It is the highest number of graduates to register for the exam so far.

Yoeseltse’s age old problem

There is acute shortage of drinking water at Yoeseltse Gewog under Samtse Dzongkhag. People have to walk a kilometre away to fetch drinking water almost every day. Although the issue is not new, yet there had been no solution so far.  For ages, people have been walking for hours to fetch drinking water from the nearest streams almost every day, while some have also started harvesting rain water for drinking.

On the way to education

Seng-Gye Gewog under Sarpang Dzongkhag has only one school, the Seng-Gye Community Primary School. The school is located between the Samartun and Balatun streams. The children of Sangaythang and Zhichathang villages have to cross the Samartun stream to go to school and back home.

Zhemgang–Gelegphu highway open

(Road block update): Road along Zhemgang–Gelegphu highway is now open to traffic. The block at Tarala was cleared this afternoon. But works are still underway to clear debris alongside the road.

Contractors allege corruption and fronting, investigation on

Some of the contractors in Monggar are not happy with the awarding of construction works in the Dzongkhag. They allege that fronting and corrupt practices are involved during the tendering processes where most of the contractors are often deprive from getting the construction works. They accuse the engineering section and few contractors.
