Gender responsive budgeting to bridge gender disparity

To bridge the gender disparity in the country better, gender responsive budgeting is being discussed in Thimphu. The gender responsive budgeting is a tool of allocating budgets adequately, by mainstreaming gender.

Vegetable farming catching up

In the wake of rupee crunch, the government has already started boosting vegetable farming in the country to meet its domestic demand. Working along this line is a gewog in Chhukha Dzongkhag where vegetable production in a larger scale is gaining momentum.

Commercial bamboo plantation to begin

Bamboo products are widely used in the construction industry. At the moment Bhutan imports bamboo from India. But the trend is likely to change in a few years as the Renewal Natural Resources Centre in Bhur, Gelephu is carrying out research on commercial plantation of bamboo. It has been conducting research on 13 different kinds of bamboo since 2006. It has also planted bamboo saplings in the community forest and lands that are not cultivable.

Political parties submit status report to ECB

The Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) has received status report from the two existing political parties, the People’s Democratic Party and Druk Phuensum Tshogpa.

A place called Halfway Home for leprosy patients

People suffering from leprosy have faced societal ostracism for many years. The disease which causes permanent skin, nerves, limbs and eyes makes them an easy target for forced segregations and quarantines. Their families and loved ones have often given up on them fearing the same fate.

Thimphu has highest traffic offenders

In Thimphu alone, more than Nu.11.5 million was collected as a penalty from the traffic violators.  Over 1000 people were fined for speeding, followed by learner licensed and unlicensed driving.

A ranger dies in accident

A 31-year-old man died on the spot in an accident last evening near Punakha Dzong parking. The incident occurred at around 6:15 pm. The deceased is a park ranger at Jigme Dorji National Park under Gasa Dzongkhag.

The National Statistical Bureau will come up with a comprehensive report on the living standard of Bhutanese people by the end of this year.

21 new HIV aids cases detected

An additional of 21 new  HIV aids cases have been detected as of June this year, according to the recent medical record. Eighty one percent of the new cases have acquired the infection through heterosexual mode. About 80 percent of them are within the age range of 15-49 years.

Bridge damaged by flood

Traffic to and from the Pasakha Industrial Estate has been suspended after the Concentre Bridge at Balu Jora in Pasakha was damaged by a flash flood triggered by heavy rain.
