Bhutan is soon expected to graduate from its status of least developed country to Middle Income Country, having fulfilled two criteria set by the United Nations. The criteria are per capita income and human asset index.
The threshold to graduate from LDC to MIC is based on a three-year average of the level of Gross National Income per capita. For 2015, the average is US$ 2,484.
Human asset index is dependent on undernourishment rate, under five mortality rate, secondary enrollment and literacy rate.
However, economic vulnerability index still remain as a challenge for Bhutan.
