Going beyond the norms of a regular day school, Rinchen Kuenphen Primary School in Thimphu is helping its students with extra hours of study. The school recently started with an evening study programme for interested 6th graders.

About 150 students have enrolled for the programme. Students study by themselves during the study period of one hour. Teachers take turns to supervise the classes and also help them revise the day’s lesson.

“We can pay attention and study as teachers are there. We can learn whatever we have learned in our class. Since exam is nearing it is helpful for us,” said one of the sixth graders, Kelsang Dechen Tshering.

Another class six student, Sonam Rinchen said, “I feel that evening study is very helpful to us because we can study after school without any disturbance and if it was at home, we land up playing and watching television”.

This time the school is focusing on students of class six as they sit for board exams. Apart from keeping them meaningfully engaged, it’s also to address the difficulty students face coping with more subjects as they move on to higher grades.

“The idea came up following a meeting with the Thromde office. The Thrompon requested the principals to take care of students especially those who are lagging behind in academics,” said the Principal of Rinchen Kuenphen Primary School, Namgay Thinley.

As part of the after-school programme, other interested students are also given basic computer knowledge for an hour.
