Chopper service earning Nu 1 M profit monthlyThe Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services Limited has been earning a profit of little over Nu 1 M a month, the information and communications minister, DN Dhungyel said in the National Assembly, today.

Lyonpo said since the service began in November, last year, RBHS’ only chopper undertook 143 tasks with a monthly expenditure of Nu 5.5 M.

On the other hand, the profit it earned a Nu 6.5 M a month. “In that way, we are earning Nu 1 M profit.”

But a member of Opposition, MP Kinga Tshering of North Thimphu said the helicopter service is running at loss.

He said the chopper was purchased at Nu 240 M and including maintenance cost and depreciation, even if they calculate for 10 years, there is already a loss of Nu 7 M in the last four months.

Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay said even though Drukair was started 30 years ago, it still needs the government’s support of Nu 165 M, annually.

“The helicopter service, which started a few months ago, and already making a profit, seems not enough. Even then, I will request the Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services Limited to take care of the helicopter.”

Today, domestic users can avail the helicopter service at Nu 1,78,000, per hour.

For those in rural area, RBHS offers a discounted rate of Nu 64,600 an hour.
