Trashi Yangtse town to start getting bigger by AugustThe wait is almost over. Construction activities in the new extended Trashi Yangtse town, which was delayed, will be allowed from August, this year.

A resident of Yangtse, Nima Wangchuk, has been waiting for more than three years to begin constructing his house.  He, along with his family, has been living in a cramped hut while his construction materials, like timber rots outside.

There are around 10 households in Yangtse Gewog waiting to begin construction activities.

“We laid the foundation and even collected construction materials before our area fell under the extended town area,” said Tshewang Sonam from Bimkhar Village.

He said some eight years have passed since then.

Chorten Dhendup from Bayling Village said the former Dzongda had told them if they are to develop, they will have to focus on farming and build houses. “Moreover, officials say we will require more houses for Kholongchhu Project. The present Dzongda also shares similar idea. But when we go to get approval they don’t allow. It’s different from what they say.”

Many say the delay has caused the enough problems.

“Since they are under Thromde, they are not entitled for rural benefits. Those who received Kidu earlier do not get the same this time,” said Trashi Yangtse’s Thromde Thuemi, Karma Kinzang.

The Dzongkhag Municipal Engineer, Jigme Sonam said they could not implement the plan due to delayed land survey and issue of lagthram.

The extended town area covers Bayling, Lhundup Gatshel and Bimkhar of Yangtse Gewog. It covers more than 700 acres of land.
