The Royal Bhutan Police inaugurated a new academic block at the Police Training Institute in Jigmeling, Gelephu, on 23rd March, 2026. The facility is expected to improve training quality by providing modern classrooms and a more conducive learning environment.

Chief of Police, Brigadier Phub Gyaltshen, inaugurated the Academic Building for Cadet Officers and Recruits, constructed with financial support from the Government of India.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief of Police said the new facility reflects a broader vision under the 13th Five-Year Plan to modernise police infrastructure and capacity.

“Under the 13 FYP, the government of India has committed Nu 900 M, of which Nu 723 M will be spent on infrastructure, Nu 72 M for firefighting and rescue capabilities, and over Nu 104 M on human resource development. The academic building that we inaugurated today is part of this vision,” said Brigadier Phub Gyaltshen, Chief of Police, RBP.

The First Secretary at the Embassy of India, Smriti Mishra, said it is an honour for India to partner with Bhutan in strengthening the Royal Bhutan Police. She described the initiative as a comprehensive and holistic development programme, covering infrastructure development, disaster response support through firefighting equipment, and capacity building through training programmes in India.

The newly inaugurated three-storey academic block features nine classrooms, a conference room, halls, a library, an ICT room, toilets, and a forensic simulation room. The facility is expected to significantly improve the learning environment for trainees, who previously attended classes in a crowded multipurpose hall due to the lack of dedicated classrooms.

The academic block was constructed at a cost of Nu. 20 million, part of the Nu. 60.85 million allocated specifically for strengthening training infrastructure at the institute. Additional developments funded under the same programme include blacktopping of the drill ground, construction of a swimming pool, and development of a football ground with artificial turf.

Officials say these investments will help produce more professional and future-ready police personnel, ultimately strengthening the service delivery of the Royal Bhutan Police.
