Orange growers and traders in Samdrup Jongkhar are experiencing a successful season, with prices reaching a record high of Nu 2,000 per crate. This price increase is the highest recorded to date, bringing hope and optimism to the local community and boosting livelihoods in the region.
The orange depots at Samdrup Jongkhar are busy these days, with workers packing the fruit for export as part of the ongoing harvest season.Orange exporters say due to the good quality of oranges, the demand for Bhutanese oranges is high in Bangladesh. Till now, the highest price recorded was at Nu 1,800 per crate.
The five orange depots in the district have already exported more than 200 truckloads of oranges to Bangladesh this season.With the orange season expected to last until mid-February, it is shaping up to be a rewarding season for both the farmers and traders.
“For Gomdar, Wangphu, and Martshala Gewogs, oranges are the main income source. Potatoes don’t grow well here and if we do business by setting up shops, that too don’t go well, so oranges are the only source of income,” said Karma, Local Trader
