To strengthen the network of young people dedicated to volunteerism and leadership in the country, a three-day ethical leadership and mind training workshop was recently conducted in the capital. 40 Young Volunteers in Action (Y-VIA) from four schools in Thimphu Thromde participated in the training programme. Young Volunteers in Action is an active network of young people empowered and involved in community service through the Bhutan Youth Development Fund.

The participants were taught about promoting ethical decision-making, self-reflection, creative thinking, motivation and exploration among others.

The training was conducted as an initiative to engage youth positively during summer vacation.

“We are conducting this training because we have noticed significant differences in their skills and experiences compared to training we have conducted in other districts before,” said Tshering Lham, Facilitator.

“This program is like a training opportunity for us. It has allowed me to showcase knowledge and skills, I didn’t know I had. Moreover, it has been very helpful as I’ve gained knowledge from new friends from different schools,” said Dzotsho Wangchuk, a participant.

“We acquired several skills and experiences through activities. I believe that by sharing these with other young people, we can contribute to nation-building,” said Wangchuk Bidha, another participant.

“This training made us more knowledgeable, skilled, proactive and empathetic towards others,” said Jigme Choeing Thrinley, also a participant.

Started in 2003 with about 30 members, the Y-VIA network has since grown to over 5,000 members nationwide, making it one of the largest youth networks in the country.
