The survivors of domestic violence now have a place to seek support in Tsirang. Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empower Women (RENEW) recently opened a Community Service Centre. The centre aims to create a physically and emotionally safe space for the victims and provide information and services related to gender-based violence.

The service centre is located in the old Damphu hospital building. The centre started catering services last month. Since then, the centre received eight cases related to domestic violence.

“It is basically to provide a safe space for all including men, women and children so that they can express their needs, share their feelings and avail themselves of the services such as getting information and also to exercise their rights,” said Sonam Choetsho, the Manager of the Centre.

As per the record maintained by RENEW volunteers, the district received 21 domestic violence cases in 2021. The centre after the risk assessments refers the survivors to relevant agencies for treatment and counselling.

“Based on the need of the survivor we will do referrals. Currently, we have case management services at our centre. So, based on it, if they need counselling, we will refer to the counsellors and similarly, we are also closely collaborating with NCWC,” added Sonam Choetsho.

The centre has a plan to construct shelters for survivors in the future. RENEW also has such centres in Bumthang and Paro. The UNICEF and the NCWC supported the establishment of the centres.
