Waste is not a waste anymore. People have now come to understand how to re-use most of the wastes by making mats and dust bins among others. While this may be the individual initiative, the government on the other hand is converting the organic waste into manure.
The best example can be the wastes from the Centenary Farmers’ Market in Thimphu. The market which produces about three truckloads of wastes every week would normally go into the landfill sites to be disposed. But this time, it serves a different purpose.
Wastes from the market are taken to Serbithang and there, the wastes are segregated and chopped into small pieces by a machine.
It is then kept for a week in six different storage rooms under the blowing air machine.
The machine gobbles up the wet garbage and coverts into organic waste.
Thimphu City Corporation’s Chief Environment Officer, Gyeltshen Dukpa, said they will soon market the manure. “We have tested it and the result was fantastic and now we are looking for market in the future.”
The future plan is to target the growing service industries like hotels and hospitals.
The Nu. 8.1 million project was initiated by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests in collaboration with National Environment Commission.
