In a new move aimed at fighting drug abuse by targeting larger groups of people, the Bhutan Narcotics Control Authority (BNCA) started Family Support Group initiative for the families of the armed force personnel.

The BNCA launched the initiative today from the Lungtenphu Royal Bhutan Army (RBA) centre in Thimphu. It is a collaborative program that will make drug-related treatment and support services available within the group through mutual support.

The group will identify vulnerable individuals and groups, and help prevent them from getting into substance and drug use among others. “They will be doing a lot of activities with regards to substance abuse,” Nima Damdul, BNCA’s Chief Programme Officer said.

The activities would include sensitization and advocacy programmes, and referral of cases that require professional help and support.

The group comprises of ten members including a Chairperson, Secretary General, Treasurer and seven executive members representing designated family camps.

The BNCA will initiate similar programme in 13 other military centres across the country as well.
