With artificial intelligence (AI) and social media reshaping how people create and consume information, knowing what to trust is becoming increasingly important. YUMRA, a youth-led group, has developed an idea called CRAFTLOCK to keep humans in control of the creative process.A picture can look real, a video can appear convincing, and a social media post can sound factual. However, online appearances can be misleading.
For young people, who are among the most active users of digital platforms, knowing what to trust is becoming crucial. CRAFTLOCK is an AI tool designed to help users create without creating content for them.
Mansa Bhandari of YUMRA said the idea came from research showing that creators want AI to assist them while retaining control over their work.
“Through our research, we found that creators don’t necessarily want AI to be removed from their work, but they want it to assist them and give them more control over their work. So instead of asking AI to continuously generate their product, CRAFTLOCK will adapt to the user’s needs and skills and assist them in the creative process,” she said.
Sangay Phuntsho Waiba, Programme Officer at the Bhutan Media Foundation, said cyberbullying, misinformation, disinformation and the spread of unverified information on social media are growing concerns.
“Through the celebration of Global Media and Information Literacy Week, we hope to raise awareness among young people about the importance of using media responsibly, verifying information, and becoming more critical and informed users of digital platforms,” he said.
As Bhutan’s digital space continues to grow, the message is that technology can support people, but people must remain informed, critical and responsible in what they create, consume and share online.
