The road development works in Olakha, Thimphu are on track but for now the condition of the road is causing a great deal of inconvenience for the residents.
“We have a problem with the roads here. There are three roads and not even one has been constructed properly,” said Sangay Wangchuk, a resident.
“The problem is worse during the rainy season. Sometimes our cars are stuck for days in the mud.”
In the winter, it is dry and dusty.
”We have to frequently wash our clothes. They get covered in dirt walking along these roads,” said Jigme.
The area is fast developing with numerous residential buildings and business establishments coming up.
The roads, which are narrow and bumpy, are always busy. Apart from small cars, heavy trucks carrying construction materials trundle along the road every day raising a small dust storm in their wake.
“When we are playing football, we get splashed by muddy water from the puddles on the road,” said Thukten.
The Thimphu Thromde (City Corporation) is well aware of the problem. The Thrompoen (Mayor), Kinlay Dorji, assured that the problems will be solved soon.
“As per the contract schedule, it is supposed to be completed by March 2012 but considering the additional works that we have given to the contractors, the new timeline we are looking at is end of May or June.
“We understand the public complains but the public also should respect public property. They unload construction materials on the footpaths and into the drains damaging them.”
The roads are being constructed with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank.
