Connectivity and information sharing among the SAARC member countries are seen as crucial factors to promote regional tourism.

The issue was discussed at the 70th Executive Committee meeting of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industries held in Thimphu this week.

“I think South Asia is least connected as a region in the world and, therefore, the focus has been on how do we make it easier for the South Asians to travel within South Asia,” said Suraj Vaidya, the President of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industries.

“We got to make it easier for us to travel within South Asia because we are one third of the world’s population, and if we could move that kind of tourism within South Asia, it would enhance the quality of lives.”

He also added it will create a lot of good opportunities.

Poor cooperation between the private sector and the governments and the political situation in the region are being cited as reasons for the pitiable connection among the member countries.

To improve the situation, the participants recommended improving tour packages and introducing E-visa in all the SAARC member countries.

Tourism is one of the leading sectors driving economic growth in South Asia. Last year, it constituted 8.9 percent of the region’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
