Taxi drivers in Sarpang are glad to know that Bhutan Taxi Association has been established.

During the meeting with the association on Friday, cab drivers said the organisation has helped them to sort out issues related to their profession. The association registered as a Civil Society Organisation was formed in May this year.

“Whenever we meet with an accident, we can promptly call the association and they take full responsibility to provide assistance,” said a taxi driver named Neyker.

Other cabbies also outlined similar benefits.

“During accidents, we get to claim vehicle insurance without much complications and add to this, if there are casualties, Nu 20000 is provided,” said another cab driver, Jigmi Dorji.

The President of Bhutan Taxi Association said the purpose of forming the association is to represent taxi drivers across Bhutan and tackle all the matters related to taxis and its operation.

The association currently has 40 registered members, two representatives each from a dzongkhag. The meeting was part of its sensitization programme to encourage drivers to register with the Association. To become a member, taxi drivers will have to pay a fee of Nu 2500 every year.
