Hundreds of job seekers thronged the Regional Job Fair in Gelegphu, yesterday, in pursuit of gainful employment.

Many job seekers visited various stalls of private companies and corporate sector seeking information about their coveted jobs.

The Ministry of Labour and Human Resources (MoLHR) Regional Office in Gelegphu said this Job Fair is slightly different from earlier ones as they have initiated on the spot employment.

Under the initiation, some 38 job seekers were employed in various firms.

“We have started recruiting job seeker on the spot during the ongoing fair. Last year, we could provide employment for 45 jobs seekers but that was after the job fair was over,” said the Officiating Regional Director of MoLHR Regional Office in Gelegphu, Sonam Dendup.

A total of 41 different private companies and corporate bodies had familiarised those looking for jobs. Of them, hospitality sector received lukewarm responses.

None of the job seeker was keen to take up the job of waiter/waitress, housekeeping and cook.

The Gelegphu Association of Hospitality Services said they have 57 jobs available but there are no takers.

“We were trying our best to invite many people as possible because we already have the list of requirement from all the hotels in Gelegphu.

Each hotel needed some our national workers but then unfortunately, we could not motivate a single person to take up such profession,” said the proprietor of Reerab Villa Hotel in Gelegphu, Ugyen Rapten.

The key objective of the Regional Job Fair is to create the platform for employing firms to meet with the job seekers in the shortest amount of time to facilitate employment, besides advertising their existing and future job vacancies. The Job Fair has been an annual affair since 2010.
