Bhutan’s medical team continues to treat Nepal’s quake survivorsIt has been over a week since the Bhutanese medical team started relief works in Trishuli under Nuwakot district of Nepal. Nuwakot District is one of the worst hit districts by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25.

Sabina Kaysi, 10, was brought to Bhutan’s medical camp with a head injury she had sustained after the walls of her home collapsed burying her in the rubble. She underwent a major surgery for depressed skull fracture removal.

“She was airlifted and brought here. Now she is stable and I am hopeful that she will recover soon and nothing will happen to her,” said Sabina’s father, Bhim Singh Kaysi.

The team has treated 921 different cases, so far. It involved 54 major surgeries. Majority of the cases being referred are orthopedic. Ultrasound and lab facilities are also being provided.

A ward has been set up for critical patients. Health personnel man the ward round the clock.

With almost all members of the team speaking and understanding Nepali language, rendering services has also been easier and efficient.

“When we heard foreign relief aids are coming in, we thought an interpreter would be required to communicate with the patients. But everyone in the team knows Nepali and communication is not a problem,” said Nuwakot’s District Health Chief, Bisworam Shrestra.

As part of the relief efforts, soelra from His Majesty the King was also distributed to the patients and the affected people in the vicinity. It included relief items like blankets, t-shirts and walking sticks.

On Sunday, a group from the team travelled to Kawley and Salmey areas in Nuwakot district. While Kawley is about two hours drive from Trishuli, Shimley takes about four hours by foot from the nearest road point. Over 400 cases were treated with two evacuations.

This week, a larger group will set up temporary medical camps in Thang Singh and Sumandar areas.

An additional team with 15 members from the country joined the medical team today.
