Tarja Kaarina HalonenBhutan should not tackle the issues of education system alone, according to former President of Finland, Tarja Kaarina Halonen. She said other countries are also facing similar problems related to education, just like Bhutan.

“There should be regional cooperation among the countries in improving education system,” she said.

The former President is on a five-day goodwill visit to Bhutan.

She said her country gives high priority to provide good education to every single student.

Finland’s education system is ranked amongst the best in the world.

Tarja Kaarina Halonen said their education system takes care of those who do not do so well in schools. “Our success is that we have succeeded to keep on board more boys and girls than many other countries.”

She said the students should be taught to solve issues by themselves. “This would make them brave, eager and skillful person.”

She added apart from good facilities, learning environment, and technical assistance, schools need to have highly competent teachers. The former President said teaching children human rights, values, duties and respect define a good teacher.

Teaching is a respected and highly-paid profession in Finland.

Tarja Kaarina Halonen served as President for two consecutive terms from 2000 to 2012. She also served in three cabinets.
