poultry-cooperatives-of-Tsirang-and-SarpangThe poultry cooperatives of Tsirang and Sarpang have come together to form the first Regional Poultry Federation in the country, at a three day workshop, that began in Gelephu, today.

The workshop will see discussion on the key activities of the federation, define objective and purpose, learn about the bylaws of federation and draft a constitution for the federation.

The Department of Agriculture and Marketing Cooperatives’ Chief Cooperative Officer, Yonten Jamtsho said, though it takes at least five cooperatives to form a federation, it is up to the members of the cooperatives to decide who all can join.

“We have established numbers of farmers group and cooperatives in the country and it’s time now that this scattered cooperatives and farmers group come together for a federation for self-help and to sustain themselves,” said Yonten Jamtsho. He also said despite various cooperatives the farmers are facing problem. “We see that federation can do lots of roles to solve the issues that each member cooperatives are facing.”

The poultry cooperatives decided that they will also allow other cooperatives like rice, dairy and fishery to be members of the federation so that every cooperative can grow together. Farmers felt cooperatives can help each other in case of disease outbreak or during difficulties and maintain a uniform price in the market.

“Through this federation we want to do away with middle or have some limited number of middle man so that both the producers and consumers are benefitted,” said the Secretary Sarpang Broiler Cooperative, Yugal Chandra Rasaily.

The three day workshop will end on June 5.
