GMC Immigration Terminal opens with automated e-gates

A new pedestrian immigration terminal has opened in Gelephu, introducing biometric e-gates to make cross-border travel faster and more convenient for Bhutanese and Indian nationals. The facility was inaugurated today. It marks a new step towards modernising border services as Gelephu Mindfulness City continues to develop.

Bhutanese and Indian nationals can now cross the border using automated e-gates equipped with facial recognition technology. The e-gates check a traveller’s identity against their registered biometric information. Eligible travellers can complete clearance without routine manual processing. However, travellers who have not registered their biometrics will continue to be processed at staffed counters.

For residents who cross regularly, the new system is already making a noticeable difference.

Tandin, a Gelephu resident, said, “The new terminal has made crossing the border much more convenient. Earlier, we sometimes had to wait for hours under the hot sun. Now, the process takes less than two minutes. It has made a real difference for people who cross the border regularly.”

Neten, another resident of Gelephu, said, “Earlier, we had to complete the CPMS process every time we entered or exited the gate. With the new terminal, the machines recognise our faces and retrieve our information automatically. It is much simpler and more convenient than before.”

Dasho Dr Lotay Tshering, Governor of Gelephu Mindfulness City

Dasho Dr Lotay Tshering, Governor of Gelephu Mindfulness City, said the terminal supports the growing number of people moving between Gelephu and neighbouring India.

“The pedestrian terminal may not be as large as some people expected. However, it is a new facility that has taken time to complete, and the equipment and facilities inside meet international standards, including a facial recognition system. Starting today, the terminal is open for public use. It will play an important role in maintaining records of cross-border movements and strengthening security. It will also help us better monitor the movement of people across the border,” he said.

The terminal will charge passengers a minimal service fee for entering and exiting.

The Governor said, “To provide improved facilities and ensure quality services, investments of this nature are necessary. Accordingly, we are planning to introduce a nominal service fee in the near future. We understand that a fee may not be welcomed by everyone. However, maintaining quality facilities and delivering efficient services require resources. We therefore seek the public’s understanding, cooperation and support.”

The terminal currently serves Bhutanese and Indian nationals, subject to applicable entry requirements.

Facilities for third-country nationals will be introduced later, in coordination with the relevant Indian authorities. However, from October 24 to November 6, invited third-country guests attending the consecration of the 108 Jangchub Chortens will be allowed to use the terminal. This temporary arrangement is subject to immigration procedures and clearances by the relevant Indian authorities.

As Gelephu Mindfulness City grows, the new facility is expected to make everyday border crossings faster and more convenient, while strengthening security and monitoring the movement of people across the border.
