As voters prepare to choose the next Thrompons for Thimphu and Phuentshogling next month, many say their decision goes beyond campaign promises. From drainage and water supply issues to safer road infrastructure, they want leaders who can deliver lasting solutions to problems that have persisted for years. People say the real test begins after the election.
In Thimphu, people highlighted a range of concerns, including recurring drainage issues during the monsoon season, the need for safer and more pedestrian-friendly footpaths, improved waste management, additional public toilets, a more reliable water supply, and better urban planning to keep pace with the capital’s growth.
“Many people walk through the town, and the footpaths here are not elderly-friendly. Therefore, the footpaths need to be improved. Moreover, there is also the issue of sewage overflows. It is not presentable, especially as many tourists visit the area. It would be very convenient for residents as well if Thromde could work on permanent solutions,” said Tandin Wangchuk, Resident, Thimphu.
“It would be very beneficial if the drainage system could be improved and better maintained to ensure cleanliness. Moreover, if the Thrompon could also address waste management issues in every part of the town, including the smaller and often overlooked areas, it would greatly benefit residents. Whoever gets elected, we hope our concerns are heard,” said Pemba, Resident, Thimphu.
In Phuentshogling, people expressed similar expectations. They are looking for improvements in disaster management, road infrastructure, tourism, drinking water supply, town planning, and sewerage systems.
“We hope to have a Thrompon who works for the welfare of all residents. The former Thrompon did a lot, and we expect the new Thrompon to further improve drinking water facilities, road conditions, disaster management, and the workshop area. We also hope for effective use of the budget where it is needed most. Also, we are looking forward to the establishment of a Hindu temple in Phuentshogling,” said Puspalal Acharya, Resident, Phuentshogling.
They also highlighted the need to strengthen tourism infrastructure and improve services for visitors entering the country through Phuentshogling.
“Currently, tourists are required to carry their luggage and walk through the terminal regardless of weather conditions. As tourists are our guests, it is important to make their experience more convenient. Necessary security checks can be conducted after luggage is loaded into vehicles through the gate, making the process more comfortable and efficient for visitors,” said Namgay Wangchuk, Resident, Phuentshogling.
Some of the concerns raised by the people have already found a place in the candidates’ manifestos.
With the election scheduled on 15th July, people say they are looking for Thrompons who can turn promises into tangible improvements for their communities.
Two candidates are contesting for the Thrompon post in both Thimphu and Phuentshogling.
