A new CSI market has been opened in Bumthang, creating a dedicated space for local products. The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Employment inaugurated the market on Thursday. It is designed not just as a retail outlet but as a collection hub where products from small producers can be gathered and sold in one place.

Officials say the market comes at the right time as tourist numbers in Bumthang continue to rise.

“Although the number of tourists visiting Bumthang is increasing every year, we have not been able to showcase the products made here. Now, this market will allow us to display those products, and it will be very beneficial for everyone,” said Karma Tshering, Economic Development and Marketing Officer, Bumthang.

A private entrepreneur with support from the ministry will operate the market. So far, he has collected products from different districts.

“Whatever we do, it is always challenging at the beginning. But I will make sure to improve packaging and presentation to make the products more attractive. I am also hoping to participate in international markets and export these products,” said Sonam Dendup, CSI Market Operator, Bumthang Town.

For local businesses, better market access has long been a challenge. The CSI market is expected to make a difference.

“So far, the CSI market has been a major supporter of our business. We have been continuously supplying to the CSI markets in Thimphu, Phuentshogling, and Paro. Now, having one in Bumthang will directly benefit us,” said Sonam Deki, Marketing Officer, Bhutan Herbal Tea, Bumthang.

CSI markets also operate internationally in New York and Perth as Bhutan Store to promote made and grown in Bhutan products, including food items, crafts, and apparel. The initiative is part of a wider effort to help small industries grow by improving access to markets and customers.
