As work to build the Gelephu Mindfulness City gains momentum, the Tsirang–Sarpang Primary National Highway is becoming increasingly important and busier. However, people say much of the road, especially around the Daraychu area, is narrow and winding, making daily travel risky and difficult. The poor road condition is also affecting local businesses along the route. But now, with a major road widening project on the horizon, these issues are expected to be addressed soon.
With the rapid development of Gelephu Mindfulness City, the Tsirang–Sarpang highway has become a crucial route. However, narrow stretches, especially between Daraychu and Shaychamthang, pose serious challenges, making it difficult and risky for vehicles, particularly heavy ones, to pass. Truck drivers say they often have to travel during odd hours to avoid traffic and ensure safety.
“For heavy vehicle drivers like us, it is very difficult to travel on this road. We have to constantly give way to light vehicles and wait, which is risky. That’s why many of us travel very early or very late to avoid traffic,” said Nima Sangay Sherpa, a truck driver.
Local businesses along the highway say the poor condition of the road has also affected their livelihoods, as fewer vehicles pass through the route.
“If the road is repaired, we will see more drivers and travellers using this highway. Right now, not many vehicles pass by, and that affects our business. The Gelephu Mindfulness City will bring more people, and a better road will help us grow,” said Deo Kumar Rai, a restaurant owner, Rilangthang, Tsirang.
The good news is that help is on the way. Speaking during the recent Meet the Press session, the infrastructure and transport minister said the government has prioritised improving the Tsirang–Sarpang highway under the 13th Five Year Plan. The 33-kilometre stretch from Daraychu to Shaychamthang will be upgraded with a budget of over Nu 900 M, funded through the Government of India’s Project Tied Assistance.
However, the minister clarified that the road section from Tsirang to Daraychu is in relatively better condition in terms of width, alignment, and pavement. As such, it will not be included in the current round of maintenance and widening works.
“The road is passable for now, but widening it will solve many of our problems. Most stretches are narrow with sharp turns, so it’s risky. But we have heard that with the Gelephu Mindfulness City coming up, it will be improved soon,” said Ashok Rai, Driver, Gelephu.
The Department of Surface Transport is currently finalising the Detailed Project Report. Procurement and execution of works are expected to begin in the current financial year.
Once complete, the upgraded highway is expected to significantly improve safety, boost local economies, and better connect the Gelephu Mindfulness City to the rest of the country.
