The National Council, today, unanimously passed the Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill 2025. The bill exempts five essential items from GST such as rice, oil, salt, wheelchairs for persons with disabilities, and sanitary pads. The council’s Legislative Committee had initially proposed to tax these items. However, the house supported the National Assembly’s recommendation to exempt them. The council also backed the assembly’s proposal to reduce the GST rate from 7 per cent to 5 per cent. The bill will be sent back to the National Assembly for re-deliberation along with recommendations.
