His Holiness the Je Khenpo consecrated the Lama Zhang Thongdrel in Tashichhodzong this morning. Lama Zhang also known as Zhang Yudrakpa Tsondru Drakpa, was a revered Mahasiddha (spiritual master) from Tibet. The Zhemgang Dzong was founded by Lama Zhang who came to Bhutan from Tibet in the 12th century.

His Holiness the Je Khenpo consecrated the thongdrel early this morning. A small crowd of sponsors and public gathered to witness the ceremony.

Measuring 41 feet by 60 feet, the thongdrel can easily cover more than half of a standard basketball court.

People of Zhemgang and other patrons paid more than Nu 3.3 M to make the thongdrel.

Karma Galley, former Lam Neten of Zhemgang said “Lama Zhang is a significant figure for our country. It is because he first visited Simtokha with consequent visits to Pangshogoenpa in Wangdue Phodrang and Tharpaling in Bumthang. Following that, he came to Kheng region of Zhemgang and established his seat there.”

The thongdrel will be unfurled for public in Zhemgang on Wednesday. It is then be installed in Zhemgang Dechen Yangtsi Dzong next week.
