The National Crop and Livestock Insurance Scheme will be implemented from July.
According to the National Council, the cost-sharing arrangement between the government and the farmers has been decided at 80 and 20 per cent, respectively.
Initially proposed in June last year, during the first session of the fourth Parliament, the scheme aims to strengthen food security and self-sufficiency by providing financial protection to farmers against losses from natural disasters and wildlife depredation.
The scheme will initially cover key commodities such as paddy, potato, maize, cattle, poultry, and piggery.
Our reporter Deki Lhazom caught up with MP Ugyen Tshering, a member of the National Council’s Natural Resources and Environment Committee to get more insights on the scheme.
