Big changes are happening at the Gelephu border. Just a few kilometers away, in Datgari, India, a brand-new Integrated Check Post is coming up. It is already starting to take shape. Once ready, it’ll make crossing the border smoother, faster, and a lot more secure.
The construction of the integrated check post is in full swing. The Nu 120 M facility will accommodate customs, immigration, security, and other services under one roof, making the movement of people and cargo easier and well-regulated. It will be equipped with e-gates, metal detectors, and surveillance systems to ensure thorough screening without unnecessary delays.
Tshering Gyelpo, a resident said “In the past, entry and exit at the border check post meant staying in lines. From next time, one can exit directly because there are separate terminals for entry and exit.”
Thinley Gyamtsho, another resident said “With the introduction of the integrated check post, all procedures will be completed through a digital system, similar to Phuentshogling. It will save time for both officials and commuters, and queuing under the scorching sun will no longer be necessary.”
Likewise, Indra Gurung said “In my opinion, the completion of the integrated check post will make things much more convenient for us. The previous check post was narrow, and heavy-load vehicles often hit the ceiling of the gate. Now, they are constructing the new check post at double the size, making it easier for heavy-load vehicles to pass through without any obstruction.”
“Currently, we exit from one side and enter from the other. With the new integrated check post, it will be more convenient, like in Phuentshogling, saving time,” who is also a resident.
A mini dry port with clearing agents’ office is 300 meters away from the border gate check point with adequate parking space. The construction started in February and is scheduled to be complete by June this year.
Tshering Norbu, Gelephu Thrompon said “Now, with Gelephu announced as the Mindfulness City by His Majesty, construction of an international airport and many other major projects will soon begin. If we continued using the old check post, heavy load vehicles would not be able to enter during the start of the Gelephu Mindfulness City project. The new integrated check post has sufficient space and a modern look.”
As Gelephu gets ready for its big transformation into a Mindfulness City, these upgrades are just the beginning of exciting changes ahead.
