Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck launched the Wisdom Centre for Justice at JSW School of Law in Paro on 22nd February. The centre will serve as the Secretariat Office for the justice sector. It is expected to foster collaboration among various legal institutions in the country and enhance Bhutan’s justice system. The prime minister and the chief justice also attended the launch event.
During the launch, a white paper outlining the vision, objectives, and activities of the Wisdom Centre for Justice was signed by the heads of the country’s 11 justice sector institutions. It was then submitted to Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck. The white paper emphasises the collaborative efforts of the justice sector and JSW School of Law in supporting His Majesty The King’s Diamond Strategy. It aims to create a unified and effective approach to improving Bhutan’s legal system.
The centre intends to coordinate reforms and review and update laws to align with national goals. It also focuses on improving legal education by offering quality training and research for legal professionals.
“Currently, the justice sector operates independently, making service delivery less efficient for both providers and beneficiaries. With the centre, we can improve coordination, engage in dialogue, and enhance justice services for all citizens,” said Ugyen Wangdi, Chief Attorney of OAG.
The centre will also offer advisory services supporting justice sector institutions with legal and policy guidance.
It will also support the justice sector in providing accessible, inclusive, accountable, responsive and quality service to promote trust and confidence in the justice sector.
