On the night of the 24th of this month, Bhutanese music lovers will watch global music superstar Ed Sheeran perform live at the Changlimithang Stadium. Beyond offering world-class musical performance, the much-anticipated concert is also an inspiration for Bhutanese artists, especially singers and songwriters to take Bhutan to the global stage through music.
In about two weeks, Bhutan will host the largest-ever musical concert. Ed Sheeran will be the first-ever international music superstar to be performing in the country.
While it is certain that music lovers will rejoice in the melodies of his songs as the global music sensation takes the stage on the night of the 24th of this month, there is a section of society for whom the event is much more than just a concert.
Local artists believe that witnessing a renowned artist perform on their home soil will inspire them and fuel their aspirations.
“Ed Sheeran’s performance in Bhutan holds immense significance, not only for me but to every other artist and every other Bhutanese fan in the country. This is the first time a global superstar like Ed Sheeran is performing in the country. I truly hope it won’t be the last. I am also very confident that through his performance he will provide us with many invaluable lessons and insights that we as artists can also learn and incorporate into our own journeys,” said Sonam Wangchen.
“Having Ed Sheeran perform in our country is big news for us. I am honestly looking forward to his live performance and am excited to witness iconic songs like ‘Shape of You’ and ‘Photograph.’ Over the past few days, I have been learning all his song lyrics so that I can sing along with him,” said Etsu.
Currently, the growth of the country’s music industry is limited by inadequate financing and persistent copyright issues.
Despite these struggles, they acknowledge that the love and support for Bhutanese music have grown compared to the past, offering hope and motivation for the future.
And they believe events like the upcoming Ed Sheeran concert will further inspire and encourage them to aspire to perform on global stages.
“I think that will only be possible if we put in the hard work. And also, on top of that, if there are more investments in Bhutanese music, and also if there are better opportunities for the artists to perform internationally,” added Sonam Wangchen.
“A few local artists have already been performing abroad, and I also dream of performing. I believe it is possible in the future,” added Etsu.
Ed Sheeran’s visit is putting Bhutan on the global stage. Fans can enjoy his music in a stunning Himalayan setting, blending world-class melodies with Bhutan’s unique cultural ambience.
This concert isn’t just for music lovers but it is a sign of Bhutan’s growing appeal and an inspiration for the local music industry to reach new heights.
