To address the public construction quality issues, the Infrastructure and Transport Ministry plans to set up a separate mobile monitoring unit under the Prime Minister’s Office. According to the Infrastructure and Transport Minister, the unit will visit major construction sites and inspect the quality of work.
The Royal Audit Authority’s latest report recorded 139 cases of poor construction works during the 2023-2024 financial year.
Currently, engineers with the Ministry monitor the construction works and ensure quality.
However, the Infrastructure and Transport Minister Chandra Bdr. Gurung says they are overburdened. This creates gaps hampering timely supervision and inspection.
A new mobile monitoring unit will conduct timely inspections, improving project quality.
He says, “The team will check on mega projects and other construction sites, either through planned or ad-hoc visits. This is a key step we are taking.”
The ministry will also allot more time for planning to reduce cost overruns and improve resource allocation.
“Rushed planning and design often lead to quality issues in large projects. We must ensure adequate time for proper planning and design.”
Additionally, the ministry will upgrade construction specifications to meet the latest industry standards and best practices.
They also plan to implement strict certification criteria for construction firms.
