Six inmates reportedly attempted an escape by digging a tunnel under a bed in their hostel at the Chamgang Central Jail in the capital. According to the police, the incident took place on the 14th of January and was discovered the following day.

The inmates, aged between 30 and 50, dug a two-meter-long tunnel. Sources say that police informers, who are inmates, tipped off the authorities about the incident. The case is under investigation.

According to the Penal Code of Bhutan, the offence of escape from lawful custody shall be a misdemeanour in addition to the remaining sentences, which the defendant is undergoing.
