Thousands of people gathered in colourful attires to attend the annual Lhamoi Dromchoe in the courtyard of Tashichhodzong in Thimphu today. Devotees witnessed sacred mask dances performed by monks.
The Lhamoi Dromchoe was instituted by Je Kuenga Gyaltshen, the first reincarnation of Jampel Dorji, the son of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in the 18th century.
Legend has it that Pelden Lhamo, the protecting deity of Bhutan appeared before Je Kinga Gyeltshen while he was meditating at the Chari Monastery and performed the dance. The festival has been performed for 314 years now in honour of the deity.
