Bhutan Boxing Federation has won more than 50 international medals in its 40-year journey. The federation took part in more than 60 international tournaments. To celebrate and encourage talented youth to come forward into the ring, the federation marked International Boxing Day in the capital today.
More than 120 boxers from the Bhutan Boxing Federation, Druk Thimphu Boxing Club, and DeSuung Skilling Programme’s Integrated Fitness Training took part in the celebrations today.
The participants showcased body combat and Zumba demonstrations. These are part of the Desuung Skilling Programme’s Integrated Fitness Training.
An exhibition match between Bhutan Boxing Federation and Druk Thimphu Boxing Club was also held.
‘‘It is about encouraging young talent to come forward into the ring with courage and determination. It is about educating our community on the importance of sportsmanship, discipline, and the value of a healthy lifestyle because I still believe that, if you don’t make time for exercise now, you probably have to make time for an illness in the future,” said Jangchub Choden from Royal Bhutan Army.
‘‘There are many boxers who participated in the international tournaments and many of them brought medals in the country. Therefore, to appreciate and thank them we are celebrating International Boxing Day,” said Sonam Penjor from Royal Bhutan Army.
Established in 1983, the Bhutan Boxing Federation fielded boxers to various other regional and international competitions such as the International Boxing Association’s World Championship, Asian Championship, and Asian Games.
Bhutanese boxers also participated in the 5th Children of Asia in Russia in 2012 and the South Asian Games in 2019 and won bronze and silver medals.
Similarly, the country was also represented in the 2nd Thailand and Indian Open International tournaments and won bronze medals.
Bhutanese boxers won one gold, eight silver, and 44 bronze medals for the country so far.
