The Trashigang district court has sentenced two men to five years in prison for smuggling drugs. The Court passed the judgment last week.

According to the verdict, 27-year-old Karma Wangchuk was found in possession of almost 3000 capsules of the SP plus or spasmo proxyvon plus drug. He was arrested by the police in April from Kanglung in Trashigang. It was found that he had purchased the drugs from 24-year-old Tshering Dendhup who had smuggled the drugs from India. Tshering was arrested from Samdrup Jongkhar last month.

The two men have been sentenced in accordance with the Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Substance Abuse Act of Bhutan. Section 141.1 of the Act states that the offence is a felony of the third degree if the quantity is more than two times the permissible quantity.
