The pedestrian terminal in Phuentshogling will soon have waiting sheds and canopies for pedestrians at the exit point. With the monsoon season approaching, the Phuentshogling Thromde is constructing these amenities. Almost 70 per cent of the works are complete as of now.

At the exit point of the pedestrian terminal, pedestrians have to wait in a queue in the open whether it rains or shines.

“We don’t have the waiting lounge and at the same time we don’t have a waiting shed at the moment so in order to protect them from heavy rain and intense heat during the summer, it is being built,” said Jigme Tenzin, Regional Director of Immigration Department.

He said these facilities worth about Nu 6 M are being built in an effort to improve the service at the terminal.

The works are expected to be complete by the end of this month.

“When we had the stakeholders meeting, most of the members expressed their concerns regarding the vulnerability for accidents.  So, from that angle, we thought that it is proper and also for the fact that we had adequate space where the construction is being carried out at the moment. What was happening earlier was that, when there were long lines, people be lining up right next to the road with heavy traffic flow and the risk of traffic accident was high,” said Jigme Tenzin.

Meanwhile, the queues at the pedestrian terminal have decreased and officials attributed this to opening more counters and employing additional human resources inside the terminal.
