Residents of Wangringmo and Doksum town in Trashi Yangtse are struggling with waste management issues after the district’s lone waste collector truck broke down earlier this month. Without any other alternatives, they are forced to pile their wastes in sacks near their homes for days and weeks.

Residents of Wangringmo and Doksum in Trashi Yangtse have stacked sacks of wastes by the walls of their homes. They are awaiting the waste collecting tractor to arrive and pick up the trash. The tractor which is supposed to come to collect the waste once every week remained out of service for close to two weeks now.

“They say we will be fined for piling up waste near our house but the tractor does not reach on time, most of the time blaming fuel insufficiency. Most of the time we have to drop waste driving our cars,” said Karma Choden, a resident.

“The last time we saw the tractor coming for the waste collection was on the 25th of last month. We do mass cleaning every Saturday and after collecting there is no place to keep the waste and as a result cattle and wind scatter the waste. It is difficult to maintain cleanliness. It would be better if the district could give us other options when the tractor is out of service,” said Yeshi Cheki, another resident.

The municipal office in Trashi Yangtse says it is working to address the issue. The office said that the tractor could not be repaired on time due to a lack of expertise.

“The waste collector tractor for Doksum broke down. The maintenance work will be carried out within a week,” Bali Raj Rai, In-charge, Municipal Office

Currently, there are around 500 people in Doksum and 300 in Wangringmo.
