Prime Minister, Dr Lotay Tshering, called on Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the president of Germany at the Bellevue Palace in Berlin this morning. The prime minister offered the warm greetings of His Majesty The King and the prayers of the people of Bhutan to the president and thanked him for Germany’s cooperation and support in Bhutan’s developmental journey.

Conveying his greetings and regards to His Majesty, the president of Germany welcomed the prime minister and the delegation for the first visit following the establishment of diplomatic relations in November 2020.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the prime minister and the president discussed topics ranging from the pandemic to the geopolitical situation to mutual areas of cooperation the two countries will pursue hereafter.

The two leaders also discussed Gross National Happiness, upcoming elections in Bhutan, and renewable energy.

Later this afternoon, the prime minister also met with Germany’s State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action, Jennifer Lee Morgan, and discussed global climate concerns, upcoming COP28 and Bhutan’s climate-related priorities.

According to the Prime Minister’s office, the two leaders decided to work on several projects together in the coming weeks and months.

Since arriving in Germany last Thursday, the prime minister also visited a vocational training centre in Frankfurt and met with Bhutanese students in Germany.
