The construction of a footpath and streetlight along the road between Bangtsho and Kipse in Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde is finally nearing completion after missing the deadline last year. And the residents say the infrastructure development works which have yet to complete are already benefitting them.

The construction of about a two-kilometre footpath, installation of street lights, and road widening works between the Bangtsho and Kipse constituencies were supposed to have been completed by mid of last year. However, the work got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But now the works are almost complete except for some final touches including installing the railing along the footpath.

The residents can be seen using the footpath without having to risk their lives by walking along the road. One can also see some of the residents walking under the streetlight during the night.

“In the past, the road was narrow and it was risky to walk. It is a lot safer now,” said Sonam Gyeltshen, a resident of Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde.

“It is risky to walk along the road due to chances of accident. Now, with the construction of the footpath, it is very convenient, we can walk without any worries. Before there was dust problem too. We are very thankful,” said Thukten, another resident of the town.

“It is very convenient. In an emergency, we can also walk even during the night since we have streetlights. Moreover, as we have a footpath now, we don’t have to worry about our children getting hit by vehicles,” added Cheten Choden, another resident.

The Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde Administration spent about Nu 39 M to maintain the road and construct the footpath and install streetlights.

The Thromde also plans to construct about 500-metre-long footpath in the town.
