Bhutan observed the 25th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol. Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen, who is also the country’s ozone ambassador, graced the occasion by voicing the need to preserve a human shield that science call as Ozone layer.
Bhutan is one of the active and committed members of the Montreal Protocol, who now enjoy the patronage of Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen.
In her statement, Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen urged to for a safer protective planet for future generations. “I would like to thank many people, our people, and individuals across the country. They are teachers, civil servants, experts, entrepreneurs and young students. Their concern, their passion and genuine commitment and contribution are invaluable.”
Her Majesty also added that there is still much to be done. “What we would like to see is our ozone work has multiple benefits to the environment, such as combating climate change through the practical and simple way of being energy efficient.”
A plaque of recognition was offered by UNEP to Her Majesty and the people of Bhutan in appreciation of the country’s contribution to the Montreal Protocol goals.

At the sideline, a concept plan of the Ozone Park in Motithang was inaugurated. In the afternoon, Her Majesty also visited Lungtenzampa Middle Secondary School where she addressed the students on the roles in protecting the ozone layer.
Her Majesty assumed the role of country’s Ozone Ambassador in May this year. Over the time, Her Majesty has visited schools in Thimphu and Paro, actively engaging with students and expressing their roles in ozone layer protection.
In the current phase of the Montreal Protocol, Bhutan has embarked to phase out Hydrochloroflurocarbons or HCFC ten years ahead of its schedule.
The Montreal Protocol is widely ratified international treaty and to date, enabled reductions of over 97% of all global consumption of controlled ozone depleting substances.
