The road leading to Kuenselphodrang has remained closed to traffic after more than 30 metres of the stretch below the Druk School at Changidaphu collapsed. As it poses risks to school-going children and nearby residents, the Thromde office has issued a public notification asking commuters to take the diversions.

“It was not an issue earlier. But now, it has become risky, especially for those travelling towards Buddha Point. Vehicles queue up in the area posing risks of accidents,” said Damcho Loday, a resident of Changidaphu.

“We take the diversions. It is very inconvenient for us taxi drivers as we get passengers mostly from the Changidaphu area,” said Tenzin Zangpo, a taxi driver in Thimphu.

“It is risky for us while going for walk in the mornings and evenings. We have to take the diversion. Moreover, we fear that our school-going children will meet with an accident along the road,” added Passang Dema, a resident of Changidaphu.

The stretch of the road reportedly started collapsing since June 15 due to ongoing construction nearby and incessant rainfall.

The Thimphu Thromde has asked the land owner to construct walls and restore the road as the earliest.

Meanwhile, the land owner has started constructing walls by deploying additional labourers to expedite the works.

Thromde officials said they are providing technical support and monitoring the site.

Parents have also requested the concerned authorities to speed up the road restoration works.

At least a hundred vehicles use the road every day.
