The COVID pandemic has disrupted people’s lives in one way or the other. Many have lost jobs and have been forced to search for other means to make a living. But if you have the will and the determination, there is always an opportunity lying around. We bring you one such story from Sarpang.

Bhupal Gurung started his LED bulb recycling business about two years ago. He repairs or replaces the damaged parts and sells them. Bhupal started his business in 2020 after he came back from Dubai where he worked for about three years. He says he decided to leave his work there and come back due to the worsening COVID situation.

“We import the parts from India. We sell the products at a price which is around 20 to 30 per cent less than the new ones. For repairs, we charge the customer based on the price of the component that needs to be replaced,” said Bhupal.

Today, his business is doing well. He says he makes around Nu 1,000 to Nu 1,200 in a day. He also employed two youth.

“We have started delivering our products to other dzongkhags now. In January before the lockdown, we generated around Nu 150,000 within fifteen days,” he said.

Bhupal aims to help replace the use of incandescent bulbs and CFL bulbs with LED bulbs which save energy and also help tackle the waste issue.

He is planning to expand his growing business.
