Bhutan will uphold all provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Health Minister Dechen Wangmo reiterated this commitment coinciding with the UNICEF’s 75th anniversary. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international human rights treaty that sets out the civil, political, economic, social, health, and cultural rights of children.

In a news release from the UNICEF country office, the health minister assured that the government is prepared to commit efforts and resources to address the existing challenges facing the children and turn them into opportunities through innovative interventions in collaboration with the developmental partners.

“We reiterate our commitment to continue working with UNICEF to ensure that we build on the progress and accelerate action for the well-being of our children, young person, and their families towards achieving the 2030 SDG goals. As we look forward to continued partnership with UNICEF, the Royal Government of Bhutan remains firm in its efforts to uphold and implement the provisions of the Convention of the Rights of the Child,” said Dechen Wangmo, the Health Minister.

Marking the anniversary, UNICEF launched a regional report titled ‘Reigniting Opportunities for Children in South Asia. The report highlights the impacts of the pandemic on 600 million children in the region.

The report called on countries to take actions in key areas including expanding investment in child-sensitive social protection programmes, resuming in-person learning in schools, building stronger integrated national health and nutrition systems, protecting children from abuse and neglect and protecting children from climate change by increasing investment in climate adaptation for children.
