Education Minister Jai Bir Rai said the government will continue providing scholarships to students to study in private schools as long as the ministry has created 13,000 seats in the government schools. As of now, government schools can accommodate approximately 9,800 students.

But as much as possible, the government schools will take in the ‘pass certificate’ students. And for this, the ministry is creating space in government schools with the construction of additional infrastructure

“From here on, we will try to accommodate as many students in the government schools by extending the infrastructure. But those in class XI who can’t be accommodated will be provided with an opportunity to study in private schools. Moreover, as per our research, we are in need of more seats meaning we will have to hire seats in private schools. We have an average of about 2,000 students who will need scholarships to study in private schools,” said Lyonpo.

A little over 2,000 students were enrolled in 20 private schools on government scholarship this year. The government decided to do away with the cut-off point in class X in 2019.
